You only have to look at how SUVs have gone in the last few years to see how once something becomes popular, all sorts of variations start to spring up. Pickup trucks are another vehicle type that’s been booming for a while now, so it’s only to be expected that variants other than full-size models have started to increase their profile.

The Tacoma has been around since 1995, so it’s certainly not new to the market. The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is third-generation of the truck that went from being classed as compact to mid-size when the second-generation arrived in 2005.

This is an area of the truck market where Toyota excels as it has been having big success with smaller pickups in the rest of the world for many years. The Tacoma is a smart-looking, capable and versatile truck with plenty of standard safety features, legendary reliability and stellar resale values.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Styling

Big Truck Styling in a Compact Package

Japanese automakers like Toyota dominate the pickup truck markets in much of the world outside North America, but those trucks are quite different from the way we like them to look here in America. Toyota realizes this, which is why it sells the Tacoma here and not the Hi-Lux it has so much success with elsewhere in the world.

The 2020 Tacoma looks even more like a slightly shrunken full-size truck than it has done in the past. It’s instantly recognizable as a Tacoma and few would mistake it for any of its rivals in the mid-size segment, but it certainly has the tough, rugged, no-nonsense style we expect from full-size models.

Smaller and Simplified

You won’t get as daunted configuring a 2020 Toyota Tacoma as you might with some of today’s full-size trucks. There’s still plenty of choices to tailor it to your specific requirements, but there aren’t quite the seemingly millions and millions of configurations you have to wade through with some full-size pickups.

There are six different trim levels in the 2020 Tacoma family, which are the entry-level SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and the range-topping TRD Pro. There’s a sportier and more off-road focused theme running through the Tacoma lineup, which is exactly the way it should be with this type of truck to differentiate from full-size pickups.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Engines and Performance

Modern and Traditional Engine Options

Buyers have two clear options when it comes to powering their new Tacoma, and both have their own merits. The standard engine is a modern 2.7-liter inline-four that develops 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, which sends its power to the rear or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The four-pot will get you a truck with some pretty impressive fuel economy ratings, but the overwhelming majority of Tacomas you’ll come across on lots will have the alternative powerplant under their hoods. That alternative is a more traditional 3.5-liter V-6, which this time gives the Toyota pickup 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque to play with. This engine can be paired with a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.

Even though this is a mid-size and there’s a four-cylinder engine option, this is still a proper truck with a ladder-frame, a leaf-sprung solid rear axle and an independent suspension setup at the front. The suspension has been upgraded for 2020, but it still rides, drives and performs like a truck and not like a crossover SUV.
