You can’t have missed how many vehicles on our roads tend to look a lot alike these days, but it’s hard to blame automakers in these challenging circumstances for playing things a little safe. Playing it safe certainly isn’t an accusation that can be thrown at Toyota when it comes to the C-HR, however.

The C-HR has been on our roads since 2017 and its development started as long ago as 2013, but this is a model that still looks like it’s just come out of the latest science-fiction blockbuster movie. If you like your vehicle styling to be modern and contemporary, it really doesn’t get more modern and contemporary than the 2021 Toyota C-HR.

Simply stunning

There are four different trim levels in the C-HR’s 2021 lineup, which starts with the entry-level LE and then goes to the XLE, Nightshade Edition and finally to the range-topping Limited model. Toyota did slightly tone down some of the lines at the front of the C-HR recently, but this is such a cutting-edge design it’s hard to tell where anything has been “toned down.”

Some of the available color schemes can make a big difference to the way the C-HR looks, and the white body with black roof color scheme, when equipped with the largely black alloy wheels, is a particularly stand-out example of how distinct this little crossover can look. Although the C-HR is classed as a subcompact crossover SUV, it’s about as close to a hatchback car as it’s possible to get without having to concede that important SUV classification. If you want an SUV but you’re not quite all-in with traditional big, square, boxy off-roaders, the C-HR is an excellent gateway model.

Carlike handling and performance

2021 Toyota C-HR Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The carlike characteristics of the 2021 C-HR are emphasized by the Toyota’s powertrain. The engine in all versions of the C-HR is a 2.0-liter inline-four that develops 144 horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission with intelligence and Shift Mode (CVTi-S).

Thanks to the smooth engine, CVTi-S transmission, standard front struts and multi-link independent rear suspension, the C-HR offers a very well-controlled ride and great handling. There’s no all-wheel-drive option for the C-HR, and the town and city-friendly nature of the little Toyota is further illustrated by EPA fuel economy figures of 27 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg combined.

Great standard equipment at every level

Buyers certainly don’t have to worry about the entry-level version of the C-HR being some sort of low-spec, stripped-down exercise in getting to a low price to attract fleet sales. The C-HR LE is a very well-equipped model that could quite possibly be the sweet spot in the range for sheer value for money.

Standard features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, full power features, lots of active safety equipment, automatic dual-zone climate control, LED headlights and daytime running lights, an electric parking brake and an integrated backup camera.

XLE models add the likes of vortex-styled 18-inch sport alloy wheels, blind-spot monitors, keyless start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Smart Key System on the front doors and rear hatch with push-button start and remote illuminated entry. The Nightshade Edition is all about style with features such as those stunning vortex-styled black 18-inch sport alloy wheels and a black chin spoiler, while the Limited gets such upscale features as heated front seats, a powered driver’s seat and leather upholstery.
