Refined for the daily drive.

Don’t be fooled by anyone who tells you a midsize SUV with three rows of seats that’s practical, safe and fuel-efficient can’t be sporty and fun, because that’s the exact trick this 2021 Toyota Highlander manages to pull off. It checks all the usual Toyota boxes for quality, durability, reliability and driver and passenger safety, but it can also look more than a little sporty in XSE guise and stiffer suspension, meatier roll bars, and tighter steering this year certainly make it an entertaining drive.

The Highlander looks good and performs sensationally in and around Stanleytown, but it’s equally at home taking you and your family out for trip to Fairy Stone Sate Park for a bit of outdoor adventure.

Highlander Trims

It’s not uncommon for manufacturers to only offer buyers a choice of three or four trim levels in the midsize crossover ranges, but Toyota really pushes the boat out in 2021 with no less than six different versions of the Highlander to choose between. And those six trim levels don’t even include the Highlander Hybrid models either!

The first trim level in the standard 2021 Toyota Highlander family is the L, which is a lot of SUV for a very reasonable asking price, while the range-topping Platinum trim borders on genuine luxury for a price much lower than a model from a prestige brand would cost you. Between those two extremes, we then have the LE, XLE, XSE and Limited models, so there really is a Highlander model for a wide range of different buyers and budgets.

Toyota doesn’t just offer a single token hybrid option either. The Highlander Hybrid range adds four models for prospective buyers to choose from, which are the Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, Hybrid Limited and the Hybrid Platinum.

2021 Toyota Highlander Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Apart from the Highlander Hybrid models, all the rest are powered by the same 3.5-liter V-6 powerplant. This engine comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and it sends 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. of torque to the front or all four wheels. Not only does this engine cope with a full complement of seven people and their cargo, but it also allows this two-ton SUV to tow up to as much as 5,000 pounds.

If fuel economy is high on your list of priorities you can have that with the Highlander Hybrid now and you won’t feel your midsize SUV is in any way underpowered. The hybrid system employed in the 2021 Highlander pairs a 2.5-liter inline-four gas engine with an electric motor and a nickel-metal-hydride hybrid battery to produce a very respectable 243 horsepower.

V-6 AWD versions of the Highlander get 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg combined, but front-drive only increases the highway rating by 1 mpg to 28 mpg. The Hybrid is seriously impressive in this area though with 35 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg combined.

No such thing as a basic 2021 Highlander

If the starting MSRP is at the higher end of your proposed budget, take a look at just how much you get at the entry-level before discounting the idea of buying a 2021 Toyota Highlander. There’s no such thing as a poorly equipped Highlander, and the entry-level L model comes with a full complement of power features, three-row seating, 18-inch alloys wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, four USB ports, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It also gets a generous amount of active safety features too, which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control and lane-departure warnings.

Highlander XLE models look like excellent value with a standard power liftgate, fog lights, heated front seats, a power moonroof, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, but you can pay more and get very close to genuine luxury. Platinum models get you 20-inch alloys, a premium audio system, high-quality leather upholstery, front seats that are both heated and cooled, heated seats in the second row, a head-up display, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera system and ambient lighting.
