Epic made possible

Competition in the midsize pickup truck segment has been heating up considerably in the last couple of years, but nobody has a stronger track record when it comes to this type of vehicle than Toyota. Toyota has been selling midsize pickup trucks around the globe for decades now, and the vast majority of them are probably still on the road today.

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is stylish, powerful, capable and extremely flexible, and it also has one of the strongest resale values of any vehicle in America. If you don’t need the size and capability of a full-size truck, the Tacoma makes an extremely strong case for itself. It won’t get you across Smith River without the help of a bridge, but the Tacoma can get you just about anywhere else.

Great choices and impressive capability

Buyers have two engines to choose from with the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, but you may find models equipped with the smaller of the two engines hard to track down. The base engine is an economical 2.7-liter inline-four that puts out 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, which sends its power to the rear or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. A Tacoma equipped with this powertrain can haul up to 1,685 pounds and has a maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds.

Most Tacoma models you’ll find on lots and in showrooms will be equipped with the superb 3.5-liter V-6 instead, and this unit sends 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear or all four wheels through that same six-speed auto. In standard form, this engine allows the Tacoma to tow the same 3,500 pounds as four-cylinder models, but with the available V-6 tow package the maximum tow rating increases to an impressive 6,400 pounds.

An impressively diverse lineup

2021 Toyota Tacoma Trim Levels

There are lots of different ways you can configure a 2021 Tacoma to suit your specific requirements, and the starting point for many buyers will be choosing one of the six different trim levels that’s right for their needs. The entry-level model is the Tacoma SR, and from there the lineup goes to the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited and finally to the range-topping TRD Pro.

Lower trim levels are available in Access Cab and Double Cab body styles, and some models are available with either a 5-foot or larger 6-foot truck bed. Higher trim levels are only available in Double Cab format, and perhaps a little surprisingly, a model like the TRD Off-Road is still available in rear-wheel-drive as well as the obvious 4×4. If you want a vehicle for negotiating challenging trails or poor weather in places like Fairy Stone State Park, the TRD Pro is a particularly good choice

Everything you’d expect and then some

A midsize truck like the Tacoma is even more likely to be bought as an alternative to a sedan or SUV by retail buyers than a full-size pickup like the Tundra, so it has to have at least a similar offering in terms of standard features and equipment. The Tacoma is well equipped at every level and even the base model comes standard with far more than just the bare essentials.

Base SR models come with power windows and locks, a sliding rear window, air conditioning, three USB ports, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, and a set of active and passive safety features that put some rivals to shame.

Every Tacoma comes with the Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense packages, which include stability control, traction control, ABS brakes with EBD, brake assist, Smart Stop Technology, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, automatic high beams and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

TRD Sport models go big with styling add-ons, while the TRD Off-Road model lives up to its billing with a locking rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, hill-descent control and terrain traction control modes. Limited models come with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a surround-view camera system, a sunroof, a premium audio system, satellite navigation, wireless smartphone charging, rear parking sensors, leather-trimmed heated front seats and plenty more.
