Elegance elevated.

With the reintroduction of the Venza nameplate here in the USA after a hiatus of a few years, it looks as though Toyota is making a statement of where it thinks the market is going. The 2021 Toyota Venza is a sleek, premium-looking midsize crossover SUV that’s only available with a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel-drive. The very concept of an AWD hybrid crossover is modern in itself, but the exterior styling also lives up to that billing.

The Venza is a five-seat crossover that’s just as suited to short urban commutes between Bassett and Martinsville as it is for long highway slogs to Richmond and beyond.

Effortlessly stylish

There are three different versions of the all-new 2021 Toyota Venza for buyers to select from at the moment, but each one has its own distinct flavor. The entry-level model in the Venza family is the LE, which really is a very nicely equipped ‘base’ model that makes a great case for itself if you’re not bothered about navigation or a particularly large touchscreen.

The middle of the three trim levels is the Venza XLE and the top-of-the-range model is the Venza Limited, but all three models in the lineup look and feel much more expensive than their relatively modest MSRPs might suggest.

Although the Venza is an extremely modern-looking model, the styling isn’t as angular and upright as something like the RAV4 and instead offers sculpted, softer, and classy design along with one of those flowing coupe-like rooflines that are so popular with buyers everywhere right now. This isn’t a polarizing design by any means and it’s likely to appeal to just about anyone interested in buying a stylish and utterly contemporary midsize SUV.

Powerful, smooth and efficient performance

2021 Toyota Venza Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The powertrain adopted by all three available versions of the 2021 Venza is every bit as cutting-edge as the Toyota’s exterior styling. The hybrid powerplant is a 2.5-liter inline-four gas engine that’s paired with no less than three electric motors and a lithium-ion hybrid battery pack to deliver a total output of 219 horsepower.

That may not sound like a huge amount for a midsize crossover SUV to some people, and if that was all the Venza had to offer then they may be right. However, the complete hybrid system also delivers around 250 lb.-ft. of torque, 80 percent of which is available for the rear wheels. Getting from 0 to 60mph takes around seven seconds, but it does it in a very smooth, effortless and controlled manner that makes the Venza as good to drive as it is to be a passenger in.

If you want better fuel economy ratings than the Venza in the midsize segment you’ll probably have to go fully electric. The Venza is rated by the EPA at 40mpg in the city, 37mpg on the highway and 39 mpg combined. That combined rating is just 1mpg less than the smaller RAV4 and makes a powerful argument for choosing the Venza above the competition as an economical way of getting between Danville, Martinsville and anywhere else in the local area.

Three straight choices

If you’re someone who doesn’t like scrolling through pages and pages of available options to almost design your new vehicle from scratch yourself you’ll love the straight, clear simplicity of the 2021 Venza and its three trim levels.

Some entry-level models from competitors are stripped-down, fleet-focused models designed to offer an enticing price-point, but the entry-level Venza L model has the feel of a mid-level or higher model. Standard features include a full complement of power features, LED headlights, a hands-free liftgate, wireless device charging capability, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an eight-way power driver’s seat, keyless start, a backup camera, leather-trimmed steering wheel and 18-inch alloy wheels. Does that in any way sound like an entry-level model to you?

XLE models add the likes of roof rails, a memory function driver’s seat, synthetic leather heated front seats and the opportunity to choose from a few select options. Limited models are not a great deal more expensive than the XLE and you then get a digital rearview mirror, a surround-view camera system, synthetic leather upholstery, a massive 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, satellite navigation, and an upscale nine-speaker JBL audio system. You can go even further if you choose to by adding the likes of a 10.0-inch head-up display and a two-panel electrochromic sunroof with transparent and frosted settings for a truly premium driving experience.
