Even more capability for 2022

The Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck that exemplifies Toyota’s prowess in this area of the market. While you’ll see far more full-size trucks in and around Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro, the Tacoma is the size of truck that Toyota sells in huge numbers all around the world. The legendary reliability and durability that sees Toyota pickups still going strong decades after rivals have long since given up the ghost is just one part of what makes the Tacoma such a great buy. And for 2022, Toyota has further enhanced the truck’s off-road prowess with some lifted suspension setups.

Trim levels

There are five different trim levels in the 2022 Toyota Tacoma lineup, which when you look at them, is probably just about right for a truck of this size and in this class. The first model in the family is the Tacoma SR, which comes with a pretty decent standard specification but is really a fantastic blank slate for customization if that’s your thing. After the entry-level SR, the rest of the lineup is made up of the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and then the top-of-the-range Tacoma Limited.
As well as the five trim levels there’s also a choice of Access and Double cabs and 5-foot and six-foot bed lengths.

Powertrains

2022 Toyota Tacoma power and capability

There are two engines for you to choose between for the 2022 Tacoma. The standard unit is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder that develops 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque which is sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The rear-drive models with the four-cylinder engine will mostly be bought by fleets, so the majority of retail buyers will probably opt for the more powerful option. That more powerful engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 which then provides the Tacoma with 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque, which can once again come mated to the manual or the automatic transmission.

Non-TRD models are the best for those buyers who don’t spend much time off-road, but TRD models more than just look the part as they really are genuine off-road champions.

Features and equipment

Although the four-cylinder rear-drive models are largely fleet models, don’t discount the entry-level SR trim as it can make a great daily driver or work truck for those shopping on a budget who still want more than just the basics. The SR comes with standard 16-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, three USB ports, cloth seats, remote keyless entry, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a six-speaker sound system and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

What really sets the Tacoma apart from the competition is the standard inclusion of the Toyota Safety Sense system across the whole lineup. This suite of advanced safety features includes Pre-Collision System w/Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert w/Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
