Ultimate versatility

Whatever you have planned for your new full-size pickup truck, you can rest assured there’s a 2022 Toyota Tundra specification perfect for what you have in mind. Whether your focus is on towing, hauling, fuel efficiency, off-roading, or just travelling around  Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro in style and comfort, the all-new Toyota Tundra has it covered. This all-new model delivers a smoother ride, much more efficient powertrain options, and upgrades to off-road and towing technology that help the Toyota keep up with its segment rivals.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck, and we’re used to half-ton trucks coming in an almost bewildering array of specifications and configurations. The all-new Tundra doesn’t disappoint in this area with seven different trim levels, Double Cab and CrewMax four-door cabs, three bed lengths, and a massive list of available options. That’s not the extent of your configuration options, either, as there are also a couple of superb engine options and rear- and four-wheel drivetrains.

The trim level lineup begins with the entry-level SR, and from there, the range goes up through SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro trim levels before reaching its pinnacle with the range-topping Capstone. There are also no fewer than five different suspension options to choose between too, and that’s before exterior colors, interiors, wheels, etc.

Powertrains and performance

2022 Toyota Tundra powertrains and performance

Toyota has decided not to bother with one of those underpowered base engines that very few customers want. Instead, the standard engine for the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra is a superb 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that develops a very useful 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine comes mated to an outstanding 10-speed automatic transmission, and the peak torque comes in at just 2,400 rpm, which makes the Tundra feel quicker than you might expect for a truck of these substantial proportions.

Perhaps the biggest news for the 2022 redesign of the Toyota Tundra is an available 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 hybrid as an alternative to the truck’s standard powerplant. The hybrid slots a motor-generator between the engine and transmission to provide an extra boost for the engine during driving. The system provides the Tundra with a mighty 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque, and it’s available for Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trim levels and standard with the TRD Pro and Capstone variants. The maximum towing capacity of the 2022 Tundra is a creditable 12,000 pounds, and that’s with an SR5 extended cab with the standard V-6 engine.

Features and equipment

The most significant leap forward the new Tundra makes over its predecessor is in the area of technology and features. The 2022 Tundra is bristling with the latest technology, such as a Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker audio system, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, even the base SR model gets. However, that’s nothing compared to a massive 14.0-inch touchscreen system you can upgrade to with the SR5, which becomes standard for the Limited trim level and above.

Limited models traditionally account for a large proportion of Tundra sales, and that’s likely to continue with the all-new model. Standard Limited features include a bump switch on the power tailgate, heated power side mirrors, the 14.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster (Hybrid versions only), a power rear window for crew cabs, and synthetic leather upholstery. It also gets you 8-way power front seats that are heated and cooled, soft-touch console and door panels, a leather-trimmed and heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitors, and plenty more.
