It’s often said that you can’t please all people all the time, but it’s fair to say that the 2023 Toyota Camry is giving it a good go. Competition in the midsize sedan segment remains strong. But it’s hard to think of another model you could go and buy today in Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, or Greensboro that’s as versatile and flexible as the Camry. Not only is the Camry an attractive, spacious, and affordable car, you can still have a V-6 engine and all-wheel-drive.
If you like being presented with plenty of choices when configuring your next new car, you’ll love what you find with the 2023 Toyota Camry. Depending on how you look at these things, there are six or eight trim levels to choose from with the 2023 Camry. The range starts with the entry-level LE, and then we have the SE, SE Nightshade, XLE, XSE, and the range-topping TRD. However, the Toyota website also lists the XLE V6 and the XSE V6 as individual trim levels, and that’s how you can get to eight.
The standard safety technology, which was already impressive, has been further enhanced for the 2023 model year. Also, the Nightshade Edition takes the SE trim and adds a black rear spoiler, black mirror caps, black-rimmed lighting, and a set of beautifully bronzed 19-inch alloy wheels to give the exterior aesthetic a moderately sinister look.
Sensible and practical are two words that will spring to the mind of most people when they think of the Toyota Camry, and the 2023 model more than lives up to its stoic reputation. Safety and reliability are further attributes of the Camry that have kept it so popular for so long, but there can be a bit of a naughty side to the Camry that isn’t perhaps as well known.
Even the base engine has a little devilment in its locker as the standard 2.5-liter turbo-four produces an impressive 203 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels in standard form through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but AWD is also available. The big fun arrives in the shape of a 3.5-liter V-6 with 301 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque, although AWD isn’t available with the V-6.
The list of standard features is impressive at every level with the 2023 Toyota Camry, especially in the areas of safety and driver assist. As we have now come to expect, the Camry retains Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA for overall safety. Every model gets standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, a rear-seat reminder, automatic high beams, and plenty more.
The XSE (with or without the V-6 engine) gets close to genuine luxury with standard dual-zone climate control, heated power front seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch black alloy wheels, and several other bits of gloss black trim. However, the TRD takes that look even further with 19-inch TRD matte-black alloy wheels; TRD gloss-black pedestal rear spoiler; TRD gloss-black front splitter, side aero skirts, and rear diffuser with red pinstriping; and TRD cat-back dual exhaust with polished stainless steel tips.
The 2023 Toyota Camry is a car there offers something for almost every new car shopper. It can be as safe, sensible, practical, and efficient as you want, but it can also be luxurious, sporty, and even a little sinister.
