Accessible electrification

We’re past the point where electric vehicles (EVs) rely purely on their uniqueness to attract attention from Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro shoppers. While a fully electric powertrain is still a novelty for many, EVs now have to compete against combustion engine rivals for practicality, versatility, comfort, style, and desirability. The 2023 Toyota bZ4X may be a compact crossover SUV powered by electricity exclusively. Still, it’s also an incredibly stylish, practical, and desirable vehicle in its own right, regardless of what’s under its hood (or not, as it happens).

Attractive in any company

Some EVs can look too different, and some look just like any other vehicle. The 2023 Toyota bZ4X occupies the real estate right in the middle of those two extremes. The exterior styling is exceptionally modern, sporty, and a little unique, but it’s not an “out there” design that will scare potential owners away by screaming to the world that it’s something different. The ground clearance is higher than the few models you might directly shop it against for a touch of extra off-road ability rarely offered by any rivals.

The interior is spacious and even more futuristic than the exterior, with well-appointed seating for five adults and a useful dual-tier format for cargo space. Those in the front get 42.1 inches of legroom, rear-seat passengers get 35.3 inches and the 27.2 cu.-ft. of available cargo space adds up to a spacious, comfortable, and practical cabin

Powertrains, range, and performance

New 2023 Toyota bZ4X powertrains and performance

With a dedicated off-road mode called X-Mode, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X offers an element of off-road prowess beyond the scope of most AWD electric vehicles around at the moment. There are two versions of the bZ4X to choose from. The first has a single electric motor driving the front wheels with 201 horsepower and 196 lb.-ft. of torque. The alternative is an all-wheel-drive variant with dual motors that develop a combined 214 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque.

The single-motor version gets a 71.4-kWh battery pack, and dual-motor models get a slightly larger 72.8-kWh battery pack. One thing worth knowing is that single-motor models with the smaller battery pack get what the manufacturer considers the superior battery, which means it’s a faster recharging unit than the larger pack. Front-drive models have an estimated range of between 242 and 252 miles, while AWD variants have a range between 222 and 228 miles.

User-friendly technology

It can be tempting for automakers to go all-in on the futuristic vibe of their EVs by packing in as much of the latest technology as possible, regardless of whether it’s necessary or helpful. Once again, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X sticks to being a car that shoppers will want to use by including everything they need and nothing they don’t need. There are two trim levels to choose between: the XLE and the higher-spec Limited.

Both trim levels get standard dual-zone climate control, a 7.0-inch Multi-Information Display, wireless smartphone charging, four USB-C charge ports, a USB-A media port, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and SiriusXM. The Limited trim adds features such as heated and ventilated front seats, SofTex-trimmed seating, Digital Key compatibility, a heated leather-trimmed steering wheel, and more.
