Toyota crossover SUVs are sensational for shopping, commuting, and plenty more around Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro. But if you want something a little smaller and more affordable than the brand’s all-conquering best-seller, the superb 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross is ready and willing to step in. This year sees the introduction of updated Qi wireless charging to complement the LE and XLE trim levels.
The three primary trim levels in the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross lineup are separate from the impressive roster of hybrid models that make the Corolla Cross an even more attractive proposition than it used to be. Although it carries the legendary Corolla name that has been so successful for so long around the globe, this Toyota is a bit more Cross than Corolla. When you see the Corolla Cross, you’re much more likely to associate it with America’s best-selling SUV than the compact car with which it shares a platform.
The gas-only versions of the compact Toyota crossover start with the excellent value entry-level L model, the mid-range offering is the LE, and the highest spec version is the XLE. There’s no L version of the new Corolla Cross Hybrid, but it is available in LE, XLE, S, SE, and XSE trim levels.
The standard powerplant for the 2024 Corolla Cross is a delightfully suitable 2.0-liter inline-four that delivers a perfect balance of performance and fuel efficiency. The gas engine develops 169 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, which gets to the front or all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). L and LE models are standard front-drive with AWD available, while XLE models are exclusively AWD. Front-drive models return 31 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 29/32/30 mpg, respectively.
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrids are standard all-wheel drive, and the new Fifth Generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS) under the hood produces a combined 194 horsepower. That means a 0 to 60 mph time of 8.0 seconds and an estimated combined fuel economy rating of 37 mpg.
If safety is an essential consideration for you when shopping for a new vehicle, you must be impressed with the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross. And even if safety isn’t top of your list of priorities, the fact the little Toyota gets Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS has to tell you a lot about the overall quality of the Corolla Cross.
Every model gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) as part of its standard specification. This suite of advanced safety features includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Road Sign Assist. All models also feature standard tire pressure monitors, nine airbags, a backup camera, Rear Seat Reminder, and Toyota’s Star Safety System.
There’s a lot to like about the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross, especially the excellent value for money it represents and its outstanding safety credentials.
