Most new vehicle shoppers in Stanleytown, Danville, Rocky Mount, Greensboro, and elsewhere in North America would probably tell you they prefer sedans to hatchbacks. But there’s a strong chance many would change their mind if more hatches looked like the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. The Corolla got a refresh last year with a new look for the front and rear, more standard technology onboard, and more power at the entry level. Toyota builds on that for 2024 with the return of a Nightshade Edition with styling cues that include a black roof and a vented sport wing.
The Toyota Corolla did away with relatively safe styling a while ago, and the Corolla hatchback has had a particularly sporty stance in recent years. However, with its pouty grille and sharp LED headlights, the 2024 Toyota Corolla looks sportier and more aggressive than any of its predecessors. And as well as looking fantastic, the hatchback body style makes it even more practical than its sedan siblings.
Shoppers find themselves presented with an incredibly straightforward choice with the 2024 Corolla Hatchback because there are three models to choose between. The most affordable of the trio is the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE, the top-of-the-line model is the XSE, and sat in the middle is the Nightshade.
The 18.-liter inline-four engine that was the mainstay of the Corolla lineup for so long is no more, which means all three versions of the Corolla Hatch have a more powerful 2.0-liter unit as part of their standard specification. The 2.0-liter powerplant provides the Corolla Hatchback with 169 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque, which is 30 horsepower more than the previous 1.8. The engine’s power gets sent exclusively to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which helps deliver impressive fuel economy for a non-hybrid.
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE gets EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 30 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined, while the smaller wheels of the SE trim level help it to even more impressive ratings of 32/41/35 mpg, respectively.
The 2024 Corolla Hatchback in all three trim levels has an impressive list of standard features, especially safety equipment. The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of active safety features comes standard. The suite includes Proactive Driving Assist, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Road Sign Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist. The Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert feature is standard with the XSE and is available for the SE as part of an upgrade package.
In addition to the specification of the SE trim level, the XSE adds the likes of a 7.0-inch fully digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, SofTex-trimmed heated sport seats with fabric inserts, and 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, and a JBL premium audio system.
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is everything you’d expect from a Corolla, delivered in a sportier, more practical, and more desirable package than ever. The Corolla Hatchback is excellent to drive, sensational value for money, and that legendary Toyota quality and reliability runs throughout its DNA.
