Front-drive versions feature a pair of permanent magnet synchronous motors at the front of the Highlander, while all-wheel drive models add a third motor at the rear. The combined output of the Toyota’s hybrid system is 243 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, which gets to the wheels through an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). All three trim levels are standard front-wheel drive, with AWD available. Front drive models get EPA-estimated fuel economy of 36 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 36 mpg combined, and AWD only reduces the city and combined figures by one mpg.
Even the most affordable version of the 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets an impressive list of standard features, but it’s hard to resist stepping up to the XLE or higher.
